While in VA I did find a book entitled Revolutionary War Bounty Land Grants. There was a George Hughs , NC Private Sept. 30 1785 whose heirs received 640 acres of land. Don't know if he died during the war or not long after. More interesting to me was Nathaniel Hughs, NC, private who received 316 acres in 1783.
While looking around for whatever I could find on Nathaniel, I ran across a post on Hughes and Related Families as follows:
In searching my family tree I have a William Hughes b. abt 1776 (d. 1846) md. Lydia Pearman a daughter of Jonathan Weldon (1738 - 1781). Both William and Lydia were born in Pittsylvania Co., VA. William was the son of Nathaniel Hughes (b-1740 - 1784) who raised his family in Pittsylvania Co, VA. After his death his wife Rebecca (unknown) and Jonathan Weldon's wife Mary Elizabeth Hanks migrated to Pendleton Dist SC where Rebecca and Mary Elizabeth remarried. Mary married a Pearman. Some of Williams brothers migrated to AL including Moses Hughes. Some of our dates don't match. Hope we connect. Nathaniel was my gggg grandfather whose oldest son Edward was my ggg.
Nathaniel is interesting. Edward's other children include:
Elizabeth HUGHES b: Abt 1765 in Virginia
James HUGHES b: Abt 1766 in Virginia
Moses HUGHES b: Abt 1768 in Virginia
Rhoda HUGHES b: Abt 1770 in Virginia
Edward HUGHES b: Abt 1774 in Virginia
William HUGHES b: Abt 1776 in Pitts Co., Virginia
John HUGHES b: Abt 1778 in Virginia
Apparently these are pretty well documented. We still do not know about the two "unknown" sons.
I would like to hear from anyone who is descended from this family.
